Guy Mendilow Ensemble
“It was a joy to experience the Guy Mendilow Ensemble for a range of audiences, from our youth concert series where our youngest viewers were immediately engaged and participating before the first note was even played, to our general audiences who were transported through global sounds and stories rooted in diasporic music traditions recontextualized in original works composed for this dynamic, border crossing ensemble.”
— Jason Finkelman, Director, Global Arts Performance Initiatives, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Urbana, IL
The Guy Mendilow Ensemble is "an international tour de force” (Bethlehem Morning Call) from the Middle East, South and North America. The ensemble combines musicianship with cinematic storytelling in shows that “explode with artistry, refinement, and excitement” (Hebrew Union College), whisking audiences to distant times and picturesque places, conjuring voices lost to upheaval, to spark personal connections with the stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary times of change. These visceral dimensions from long-ago-and-far-away, resonate today inspiring questions about our own struggles and dilemmas. The Guy Mendilow Ensemble draws on traditional tunes, techniques and tales but in elegant arrangements and with radical reframing.
Performances draw on expertise from a broad musical palette. The emotionality of Western classical music is intensified by the bittersweet rawness of Tango, gorgeous vocal harmonies and the rhythmic fire of classical Arabic percussion. Guy Mendilow’s storytelling is inspired by the dreamlike qualities of Pablo Neruda and Michael Ondaatje and by Dan Carlin’s vivid restoration of faded historical memory.
Distinguished educators, ensemble members also specialize in residency and community engagement. The ensemble has been an artist-in-residence with the Celebrity Series of Boston's Arts for All since 2014 and designs custom residencies for performing arts organizations across North America. The Guy Mendilow Ensemble has received numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Boston Foundation, New England Foundation for the Arts and the Western Arts Alliance for its artistry, cultural preservation and work in strengthening communities through the arts.
